A PIECE OF PARADISE IN SOUTH AMERICA: CUENCA, ECUADOR

By: Laura Marcela A.

Well, maybe I should to say hello and thank you for visit my blog. My name is Laura Marcela Aguirre, but in the letters world, my name is Arual Saudade. I’m 16 years old and I’m living the crazy of study Medicine in the ICESI University (probably you think that I should be at high school… I often think it too). I don’t work, and as my parents say, my only obligation is be a good student. I love to write about my thinking, about that I see and what I opine about it. I write poems, fantastic stories and someday I will to write a novel (and someday, If God want, I’ll win the Nobel prize). I love the coffee, in all forms: hot, cold, with milk or without it. I like spaghettis, pizza, beef, and almost all foods with rice, salad and tea. About clothes, I prefer to be comfort, which is the reason because I love to use medicine pajama. But, I’m a girl and I like jeans, pretty blouses, long socks, converse and sometimes, high heels. I love travel, because I think that my soul can fly when I am sited in a chair of an airplane. Although I don’t travel frequently, I am thankful to have had the opportunity of know wonderful places. My favorite part of a trip is that I can know and appreciate the difference of culture, it means, new customs, lifestyles and way of seeing the world. I love the culture expressions, like dancing, art and different things that make happy a normal day. I always have thought that my family is my major treasure, the only people that always have been and will be with me. My parents, uncles, aunts, cousins and my grandparents are my support in the hard times. On the other hand, I think that I’m a sociable girls, and thanks to that, I have been able to know cool people. Now I can say that I have the best friends of the world.

I’m writing this blog for two reasons. First, it is an assignment for my English course at ICESI University. In second place, I think that the wrote word is more durable that the said word. I like to share with other people, one of my favorite experiences, my trip to Cuenca, Ecuador. Maybe in a few years, I will forget some details, but with this blog I may remember. Moreover, my opinion can be a referent for my English classmates, my teacher and for all the visitants of this blog. Then, they may have a reference of this wonderful place and maybe they will encourage to do the trip.

It was cold and sun. Since I descend of the airplane, I knew that it would be perfect. It was November, Andrea, one of my best friends and me were living our dream. We were representing our school in UDAMUN, an international Model of United Nations in Cuenca, Ecuador. The city is wonderful, is a perfect mix between old village and new and technologic city. I loved this city, since the flowers plaza until the malls. We lodged in the Cordero Hotel, belonging to Model Secretary’s family. The style was sober, elegant and cozy, the rooms was big and comfort, and the staff was friendly. At the morning it was cold, and we want stay in the bed forever. But the duty called. The event’s aperture was in the Sucre Theater, a big and elegant place. Here, we participated in a Welcome cocktail, and I had the opportunity of reconnect with my old friends, as well as know new people. It was amazing.

In general terms, I loved Cuenca, a young and old city, with 54 churches (one for each week of a year), with the old buildings and its four bridges, I loved it because it is unique, for example, it’s the only city that have two cathedrals in a plaza. The Cuenca’s architecture is just a little piece of the wonderful puzzle. Because the best part is definitively, the people.

The fireworks castle, the music and the foods with mote, was my favorite cultural expressions. I have not words to describe the sensation that I had when I saw the indigenous people, playing in the street, the music of our ancestors, and when I saw the sunrise above a lot of domes. Cuenca counts with a big variety of people. Asian, European and American people. Natives and tourists, coexist in a wonderful place, and the most incredible is that, the major of people are friendly and helpful.

I believe that I have talked too much about my experience; only I have to say that the Model United Nations was amazing, and I won the “best delegate” prize. I wanted to stay forever in Cuenca, I didn’t want to come back… this experience touched my life. Finally, my friend, my teacher and me, take the plane to home. A few days later, my body was in Cali with my family, but my mind was with my friends, in the beautiful streets of Cuenca, Ecuador.

I believe that until now, I have gave you too much reasons for visit Cuenca, but I’ll make you more easy: You should to visit Cuenca, because is a piece of paradise in South America. I would repeat this experience again and again, I would take the panoramic bus of two floors, and I would be happy again…¿Why not?
